How Fathom's cookieless analytics work
Fathom pioneered a unique approach to cookieless tracking that prioritizes visitor privacy while still giving you valuable insights into your website. At the core of our cookieless tracking technology is a combination of hashing and salting. This process anonymizes visitors’ request information, including IP address and user-agent, to create strong, site-specific visit signatures.
When someone visits your website, Fathom briefly processes the request's IP address and user-agent, then hashes them with the site identity and a daily salt using SHA-256. That creates a site-specific visit signature. We don't collect that personal data. The salt rotates at midnight UTC, so the signature is not meant to follow someone from day to day. This approach lets Fathom measure pageviews, bounce rates, and time on site without compromising visitor privacy. And because it doesn't use cookies or fingerprinting, Fathom's data collection is unaffected by browser cookie restrictions such as Safari's Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP).
