Multi-domains

Say you have several domains (and subdomains) and want to collect data for all of them on a single Fathom dashboard - but most importantly, filter that data per domain.

With our multi-domain option, you now can.

Using multiple domains with the same Site ID

Multi-domains is a site-level option, so you can enable it by going to Settings, then click on the Site name you want to enable it on and scroll down to the Multiple domains section.

Once enabled, you’ll see a Domains tab in the Content box on your dashboard. You can click on that tab to see all the domains visitors clicked around on and click any domain listed there to filter by it. When you filter by that domain, our dashboard updates to show you data just for that domain (so things like the referrers box, devices box, etc., all update to show you data just for that domain you filtered by).

Options for multi-domains

When the multi-domains feature is enabled, you’ll be presented with two options, Combined and Separate.

By selecting the Combined option, we treat all people who visit your site (visitors) as a single visit across all your domains.

Example: So let’s say you use a single Site ID across your three domains: cat.com, shop.cat.com and docs.cat.com. If Jane clicks over to cat.com, then to shop.cat.com, and then to docs.cat.com - if you have Combined selected, Jane’s clicking around counts as one visitor with three views. Her visit is counted on the domain she loaded first, in this case, cat.com.

Using Combined is useful when you have several domains for the same site. For example, many software companies have site.com as their marketing site, app.site.com as their application portal and docs.site.com as their support/documentation site. They’d want to count them all as a single site but be able to filter each to drill into their data further.

By selecting the Separate option, we treat people who visit each domain as a visit on each domain.

Example: So let’s say you use a single Site ID across your three domains: cat.com, luna.cat.com and olli.cat.com. All three domains Jane loaded count as one visitor and one view. If Jane clicks over to cat.com, then to luna.cat.com, and then to olli.cat.com - if you have Separate selected, Jane’s clicking around counts as three visitors with one view per domain.

Using the Separate option is useful when you have a multi-tenant application where customers have their own unique domain that points to your application. In that case, you’d want to treat every visitor to every unique domain as a separate visit.
